Consider this a warning: "Homemade Junk Vol. II" by St. Louis' own DJ MAHF goes beyond the realm of the simply infectious and crosses directly into the territory of a full-blown epidemic.
If you start listening to this flawless mix by one of the best DJs you have never heard, you may never stop. It could become a problem, it might require rehab, your people will have to hold an intervention at some point - it is that good. An instant classic, MAHF's "Homemade Junk II" is a music fan's wettest dream come to life. Iconic rock blends with hip-hop bangers and the result is nothing less than the soundtrack to your weekend - for many, many weekends.
To those unfamiliar with his work, MAHF has steadily and stealthily been taking over your city one club at a time. His talent for getting a party started almost instantly garnered him the Riverfront Times award for Best Hip-Hop DJ in '06, but his underrated turntablism helped his crew Earthworms win the Best Hip-Hop title the same year and remain perpetual contenders for the crown. "Bottle full of Bourbon," EWMS' latest, has been nominated this year for Best Local Album - an almost unheard of feat for an underground act in St. Louis considering the last "local" rap record to be up for the RFT's Best Local Album was by Nelly.
"Basically, this is kind of me having fun with my records," MAHF said in a recent interview, "I got a little bored with getting stereotyped as just a club DJ, and wanted to flip some favorites from my underground roots." Indeed, he does. MAHF does a Dominique Dawes all over HMJ2, serving up more fresh combos than Tekken 7. Common's "The Corner" is laid over Atmosphere's "Trying to Find A Balance", "Callin' Out" by Lyrics Born meets the immortal "Ante Up" instrumental by M.O.P., and the killer Outkast "B.O.B" and DJ Shadow's "Napalm/Scatterbrain" fusion are just a few examples.
Projects abound for DJ MAHF: work on the new Earthworms record, collaboration with Columbia's own Steddy P and "Speaker City" with helias, only scratch the surface (no pun intended) of planned releases on various record labels such as The Frozen Food Section, F5 Records, Indyground Entertainment and Riverfront Radio. You can catch up with him on any given Wednesday at the Upstairs Lounge, Thursdays from 7 to 10 p.m. as he co-hosts the popular internet radio show "The Balls "on RiverfrontRadio.com with fellow worm Mathias, Fridays at Atomic Cowboy and Saturdays he is a little further down the street at A.M. Lounge.
"Homemade Junk Vol. II" can be found online at TheFrozenFoodSection.com, or in the flesh at Vintage Vinyl. To contact DJ MAHF directly regarding booking info, monkeybars or beard grooming techniques, his email is djmahf@hotmail.com or you can hit Myspace.com/djmahf.
Your headphones are going to love you for this.
