University of Missouri-St. Louis guard Jeremy Brown, junior, undecided, had 17 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists to lead the Tritons to a 103-67 win over Robert Morris College last Tuesday at the Mark Twain Gymnasium.
Four other Tritons scored in double figures as UM-St. Louis improved to 2-1 on the season, while earning its most lopsided win since a 104-80 romp over Lincoln University during the 2004-05 season.
"It thought our effort was much better (than in last Saturday's 65-59 loss at Truman State)," UM-St. Louis coach Chris Pilz said. "Everybody got to play tonight. Hopefully, we'll continue to have this kind of effort and our execution should get better."
Other standout players for the Tritons included guard Aaron Jackson, senior, liberal studies, who had 15 points; forward Tim Green, senior, accounting, 14 points; forward Ryan Lawrence, sophomore, undecided, 14 points and 13 rebounds; and guard Alex Jackson, senior, criminal justice, 10 points.
But it was Brown that really got UM-St. Louis going in the first half. An explosive player who came to the Tritons via off-season student tryouts, after spending three seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers' minor-league baseball organization, Brown scored 12 points in the opening 20 minutes.
Among those scores were two rim-rocking, putback dunks that helped UM-St. Louis build a 43-32 halftime lead.
"Those are just not everyday plays," Pilz said. "He's a big-time athlete. If people start finding out about (those kinds of plays) we're going to start filling up the stands a little bit. And hopefully, the rest of the guys will feed off that a little bit."
Pilz was also pleased with the team's point-guard play. Beaumont Beasley, freshman, business, had seven points and seven assists in his first college start. Jason Black, senior, business management, added eight points and a career-high 10 assists as UM-St. Louis earned its 10th straight nonconference home win.
"Beaumont did a real good job and Jason's one of our team leaders," Pilz said. "That's what we've got to have from them."
Robert Morris' Brandon Myles led all scorers with 21 points. It wasn't enough, as the Tritons outrebounded Robert Morris 49-31, forced 19 turnovers, and shot a sizzling 64.1 percent in the second half
"I think we're going to be an exciting team to watch," Pilz said. "We're a work in progress. But we just need to keep working hard and have some people come on out and watch us."
"Our guys work hard … If we continue that, I think this bunch is in for some good times ahead."
