Television has made our world a completely different place. Instead of children going out and playing, they sit inside and play video games. There is, however a lot that can be learned from television. I think that people just need to learn how to manage their time appropriately.
In my opinion, television is a wonderful thing. You can get the daily news, latest sports scores and updates, stock market numbers and even go to classes, all on television. Tele-courses are offered at UM-St. Louis that implement television programming with web-based teaching. These courses do take more dedication, since it is your responsibility to keep up with the television lessons.
Stations such as The Learning Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery and History all provide educational programming for people to enjoy. Most of these stations provide the information in insightful ways that make it interesting to watch and learn about. One of my personal favorites is TLC because I can learn more about interior design and even planning a wedding.
Honestly, one of my favorite stations to watch is MTV. You can watch so many different kinds of shows. From reality television, to music videos and car repair shows, just about anything can be seen on MTV. I do not, however, think that this station is appropriate for all audiences. Some of the language and sexual implications on many of the shows can be too much for younger children. Parents do need to be paying attention to what their children are watching because there are many shows out there inappropriate for specifics audiences.
Most people watch television to get their daily dose of the day's news. It is convenient, does not require people to pick up a paper and read and is available at different times of the day. I think that the news is the most popular way of people getting their news. News is portrayed in an interesting light on television. You get to see more than just the news; sports, health and education are all seen on a local news broadcast.
Political events are also televised. People are then able to watch the event as it is happening and from the comfort of their home. You also are not obligated to sit around and watch the whole event. Watching the event at home allows you to switch between other stations, so that you are not stuck watching one thing for a long period of time unless you want to.
More and more elementary school and high school teachers are implementing television programming or movies into their lesson plans. It can be an interesting way for students to soak in the information. I think that they are more inclined to absorb information when it is presented in an exciting fashion. Teachers can also make the lessons more exciting with their own methods.
I think that when children are sitting at home watching television, they are soaking up more information than they realize. When I think back to my childhood, I realize how much I really learned from the shows that I watched. Of course, there are also those shows that did not serve me at all, such as Beverly Hills 90210. However, you have to watch some shows for entertainment value. When I watched Sesame Street or Mister Rogers I learned how to speak some Spanish words and how to say the alphabet.
I do not think that television is all bad. People in general learn a lot more from it than they realize. After all, our world would be a lot more boring without it. Do set limits for your children; I do not think that it is healthy for them to sit in front of television for hours. Also, monitor what your children are watching because there are many shows televised that are not appropriate for all audiences.
